Dear families,
As our children take a much earned break from the hustle and bustle of the academic year, providing our children with the opportunity to relax and rejuvenate over the summer is so important. We encourage our families to use this opportunity to develop the life-long skills that will enable them to successfully navigate their futures. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Continue to develop a relationship with God. There is no relationship of greater importance, therefore allowing our children to partake in weekly Mass is so essential in their development and understanding of God's love.
2. Do household chores daily: This will help your child understand how to be a part of a team and that all members have to help for the greater good. They will also learn to become more appreciative and develop greater self- efficacy. Select age-appropriate chores which can include, but is not limited to, cleaning up one's room, doing laundry, doing the dishes, sweeping, dusting and polishing, feeding and cleaning the pet, etc.
3. Read, read, and read some more. Reading books from a variety of authors and types of books (such as novels and informational text/technical books) will help to expose your children to the depth and breadth of the English language and build their background knowledge.
4. Get at least 1 hour of daily physical activity.
5. Limit screen time and allow your children the opportunity to play outside.
6. Use the summer to develop and strengthen skills. We recommend that all students complete all the Language Arts and Math skills in IXL for their current 2019 - 2020 grade level. This helps to ensure that your child has a strong foundation for the upcoming grade level. For example, if a student is currently in 4th grade and will begin 5th grade during the 2020 - 2021 school year, we recommend completing the IXLs at the grade 4 level.

Dear Parents,
I can’t believe summer is already here. To help reinforce and review important skills that they have gained this year, I have provided your child with a mandatory summer learning packet.
The third grade packet includes a book report, and math fact timed sheets. For the book report, they do not need to choose from the list of books provided. If you would like to use your child's lexile level (from their Scantron report) to identify an appropriate book of interest, please go to Lexile.com to do so. For the math fact timed sheets, please start with addition and subtraction, and make sure your child can complete them accurately in the time given. Then move on to multiplication and division. I understand that children may be at various levels in their abilities, and want you to challenge your child appropriately. Please encourage your child to work on this throughout the summer, and not wait until the last minute to complete the assignments.
This packet is due the first week of the new school year. It will be your child’s first graded assignment. I hope that you have a safe, fun, and blessed summer. See you in the fall!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Russo

Math-Please practice quick recall of math facts. Begin with addition, then subtraction, and move on to multiplication and division if your child already knows their other facts fluently. If your child gets anxious because they are being timed, just encourage them to beat their score. Fill out the Fact Log only and return it the first week of school.

Incoming and continuing Middle school language arts students:
Dear Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders and Parents,
Research indicates that summer reading keeps the mind sharp and maintains independent reading levels. The gap between students on statewide testing can be closed by continuing to read throughout the year, but especially over the summer. Additionally, reading over the summer helps students reach their reading level expectations. The more they read, the higher they will perform. I encourage parents to get actively involved with the selection process and to support your child(ren) in reading over the summer. Perhaps, parents can read a book or two as well?
